Benefits of going braless

We’re told that our breasts will sag without one. And that it’s practically a crime if the outline of a nipple shows through our clothes. But do we really need bras? Let’s look at what the science says and some of the potential benefits of going braless.

Your breasts will get stronger and perkier

A 15-year French study of more than 300 women between the ages of 18 – 35 by sports science researcher Jean-Denis Rouillon found there was absolutely no benefit to wearing a bra and that it might even make things worse. The nipples of the women who didn’t wear a bra were actually higher than the regular bra wearers. So rather than preventing sagging, bras appeared to actually be causing sagging. They believe this was due to the fact that the women who went braless developed stronger muscle tissue, which provided their breasts with natural support.

Your circulation and breathing will improve

Bras are constricting by nature. So when you don’t wear a bra you allow your blood to flow freely. You can also breathe more easily. Deep breathing is known to improve energy levels, lower anxiety and even release endorphins, our body’s natural painkillers.

You’ll sleep more soundly

Wearing a bra at night has been proven to disrupt sleep. But even wearing one during the day can negatively impact your sleep. In a small-scale study, Japanese researchers found that wearing a bra or girdle could lower levels of melatonin, disrupting circadian rhythms and leading to a poor night’s sleep.

You’ll be more comfortable

You know that feeling you get when you first take off your bra at the end of a long day? Well, you could have that feeling all the time. No more wires poking you or straps digging into your shoulders.

You’ll save a lot of money

You may still need to wear an exercise bra

One of the few times it may be necessary to wear a bra is during exercise. Depending on the size of our breasts they can move from half an inch for an A cup to 2 or 3 inches for a D cup. This can cause breast pain and stretching of the Cooper’s ligaments, the connective tissue in the breast that helps it retain its shape. Some breast movement is OK, but if the breast moves 60% or more the skin of the breast and the Cooper’s ligaments won’t go back to their original shape. So if you’re running or doing other exercise it’s best to invest in a good sports bra.

You’ll feel freer going braless

OK, this one isn’t scientific, but there’s something about not wearing a bra that makes you feel a bit more relaxed in the world, maybe even a bit risqué. So go on, why not try out the freedom of being sans brassiere? You might even find yourself feeling a little bolder.
